I Had OpenAI's Astra Redesign My Entire Website

Astra's front-end design got much better, so I tried it on Rosetta. I only suggested a quill and an ink bottle, and it drew the whole hero image. Claude cleaned up the 51 loose ends.

Rosetta's new hero image: old books, bilingual parchment, a quill and an ink bottle

Rosetta's redesign is live!

It's that AI translation tool I built for a high school friend, the one I shared here before. I went for a redesign because I'd heard OpenAI's new Astra had gotten much better at front-end design, so I figured I'd try it on Rosetta.

All I gave it at the start was one paragraph: keep the existing color palette, redesign the whole site, make it feel more literary and more crafted, and show me your visual plan first so I can confirm it before you touch anything.

It came back with a single page I could click through, with four versions in one go. They were all just basic UI work though, with no real visual theme to them, so I made a suggestion: try a quill and an ink bottle for the hero image, with parchment, and a few books in the original language stacked behind.

The parchment on the left has the English original, "She opened her notebook and wrote down the date.", and the one on the right has the Chinese translation, 「她翻開筆記本,寫下日期。」

Under "notebook" and 「筆記本」 there's a thin red proofreading line on each side. Next to them sits a quill, resting in an ink bottle. The whole hero sticks to Rosetta's original blue-gray and cream palette. It really does look good.

Once I confirmed it, it rolled that style across the entire site, from the home page to the proofreading workspace.

After Astra was done, I found a few places on the staging site where the design still wasn't consistent, so I asked Claude to look it over. It found 51 inconsistencies and 2 bugs. I made the calls on the handful of trade-offs, then had it ship the fixes in three batches.

Last of all, we redesigned the little icon next to the Rosetta title to match the new mood, and turned it into a cute book page with a quill. I'm pretty happy with how it came out.

If you're curious, go take a look at the new one.
